Russian government confirmed 2030 Forest Strategy

The Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev has signed 2030 Forest Strategy introduced by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The Strategy is aimed at surging competitive ability of the forest industry, greater timber industry contribution to social and economic development of the country, effective use, conservation, protection and reproduction of forests through sustainable forest management.

The Strategy focuses on growing export-oriented pulp production, container board and tissue products turnout for local market, equally domestic market-and export-oriented timber production, plywood and slab production, as well as furniture and wooden house construction.

During a meeting with Vice-Presidents dedicated to timber industry development, the Prime Minister noted that the Strategy sets the basis for state-of-the-art forestry focused on added value wood processing.

“According to the Strategy, a whole group of competitive industries, rather than just one, are to be created by 2030. The Strategy sets forth measures to promote rational natural resources management”, – the Head of the Government stated.

Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov named top-priority areas. According to him, by 2030, the worldwide demand for pulp is expected to reach 17 million tonn per, and Russia should strengthen its position in the market by creating new pulp and paper capacities. Apart from that, production of tissue products is likely to grow by 6% annually and increase in 2.5 times by 2030.

Moreover, another crucial development course is wooden house construction and wood waste recycling into biofuel.

“As a result of the Strategy, the industry plants’ added value is expected to reach 676 billion rubles in fixed prices, while timber industry contribution to GDP will grow from 0.5% to 1.0%. Number of specialists working in timber industry will increase from 500 to 820 thousand whereas tax revenue will increase from 91 to 189 billion rubles”, – Denis Manturov said.

The decree of 20 September 2018 №1989-r on Strategy ratification is published on the official website of the Government of the Russian Federation.
